  • 1st/2nd grade, 3rd/4th grade, 5th/6th grade, 7th/8th grade

We are looking for coaches on the boys and the girls side. Unless otherwise outlined below:

  • Girls practice on Monday and Wednesdays at 6pm.

  • Boys practice on Tuesday and Thursdays at 6pm.

These coaching positions are essential in fostering a positive, competitive, and development-focused lacrosse experience for players of all skill levels. As a coach, you will be a crucial figure in shaping each player's experience, ensuring they improve their skills, feel valued, and deeply enjoy their time with Brookline Lacrosse. We are committed to lifting every player up and instilling a lifelong love for the sport. Each grade level’s lead coach is compensated for their role and is responsible for: Collaborating with parent coaches and high school-aged volunteers to create a supportive and well-structured environment.

  • Developing and distributing age-appropriate practice plans tailored to the skill levels and needs of players.

  • Using a Google platform to share practice plans and communicate effectively with the coaching team.

  • Attending required coaching trainings. These will likely be a required component of coaching to ensure alignment with league standards and player safety practices. 

  • Complete Brookline Recreation Background Process.

Job Description: BOYS 5th-6th, OR BOYS 7th-8th Grade Lacrosse Coach

Location: Brookline, MA
Reports to: Unit 1 Athletics
Compensation: Stipend commensurate with experience

Unit 1 Athletics is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic 7th and 8th Grade Lacrosse Coach to lead and develop the Brookline Youth Lacrosse Program, fostering a positive, inclusive, and high-energy environment. This program serves players from Brookline's eight elementary schools and local private schools, emphasizing the development of all players, regardless of skill level, while fostering meaningful connections and integrating new participants into the program’s ecosystem.

The coach will design and execute a cohesive, age-appropriate curriculum that prioritizes high-repetition, high-volume activities to ensure maximum player engagement and skill development. Emphasis will be placed on facilitating practices with less talking and more doing, creating an environment where players are constantly active and improving through hands-on experience. All Brookline youth coaches must model a growth mindset, and a willingness to improve their coaching craft (ongoing conversation, video assessment, reflection, player analysis, practice time audits). Note: Completion of the Massachusetts Youth Lacrosse Coaching Training will be required to ensure all coaches align with league standards and prioritize player safety and best practices. Coaches will also need to complete Brookline Recreation Training and Background Process.

Responsibilities

Program Leadership

  • Lead all aspects of the 7th and 8th-grade lacrosse team during practices and games, ensuring a positive and inclusive experience for all participants.

  • Act as the unifying presence for players of different skill levels, fostering team cohesion and growth.

  • Collaborate with Unit 1 Athletics to ensure program alignment with organizational goals.

Practice Planning and Execution

  • Plan and execute 10 weeks of practices (30 total) that balance skill development for advanced players and newcomers.

  • Implement scaffolded drills focusing on core lacrosse skills, including groundballs, shooting, small-sided games, mini-sixes competitions, and game-like scenarios.

  • Lead Monday practices for advanced players and Select Team members, focusing on high-level skill development.

  • Conduct Tuesday and Thursday practices for all players, emphasizing inclusion, skill-building, and teamwork.

  • Develop detailed practice plans that include roles for 2-4 parent volunteer coaches, ensuring their contributions are meaningful and integrated into the program.

Game Coaching

  • Coach Friday night games for the Select Team, providing leadership and strategic direction to support competitive success.

  • Coordinate with parent volunteers who will coach Sunday Classic Games, ensuring consistency in player experience and development.

Player Development

  • Prioritize the growth and development of all players, including Select Team members and those in the broader team.

  • Conduct evaluations during Select Team tryouts (scheduled for early January) and provide constructive feedback to players and families.

  • Support and include players from the Parkway program and Boston, ensuring a diverse and competitive Select Team roster of approximately 20 players.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Maintain regular communication with Unit 1 Athletics to align on objectives, player progress, and coaching strategies.

  • Work closely with parent volunteers to ensure they feel supported and understand their roles during practices and games. 

Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to:

  • Preseason meeting(s)

  • Ongoing conversations about coaching practice

Qualifications

  • Proven experience coaching lacrosse, preferably at the youth or middle school level. 

  • Strong understanding of lacrosse fundamentals, strategies, and gameplay, with the ability to teach both advanced and foundational skills.

  • Ability to create engaging, high-intensity practice plans tailored to players of diverse skill levels.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with experience working alongside parent volunteers and organizational leadership.

  • Passion for player development and fostering a love for the sport.

  • Completion of the Massachusetts Youth Lacrosse Coaching Training is required before the start of the season.

Commitment

  • Practices: Mondays (high-skill focus) and Tuesdays/Thursdays (all players) from 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM, starting March 24, 2025.

  • Games: Friday nights for Select Team players (10 games total).

  • Season Length: 10 weeks, including 30 practices and 10 Select Team games.

We emphasize the development of all players, regardless of skill level, while fostering meaningful connections and integrating new participants into the program.

Emphasis will be placed on facilitating practices with less talking and more doing, creating an environment where players are constantly active and improving through hands-on experience. Note: For Boys, completion of the Massachusetts Youth Lacrosse Coaching Training will be required to ensure all coaches align with league standards and prioritize player safety and best practices.  This training is NOT required for girls.   • Create a fun and supportive environment where players feel comfortable learning and developing their skills.

  • Collaborate with Unit 1 Athletics to ensure program alignment with organizational goals.

Practice Planning and Execution

  • Plan and execute 10 weeks of practices (20 total) focused on fundamental skill development.

  • Implement age-appropriate drills focusing on core lacrosse skills, including:

    • 1st/2nd Grade: Basic stick skills (cradling, passing, catching), groundballs, and introductory game concepts.

    • 3rd/4th Grade: More advanced stick skills, shooting, dodging, basic offensive and defensive strategies, and small-sided games.

  • Boys Teams: Lead Tuesday and Thursday practices.

  • Girls Teams: Lead Monday and Wednesday practices.

  • Develop detailed practice plans that leverage 2-4 parent volunteer coaches, ensuring their contributions are meaningful and integrated into the program.

Player Development

  • Prioritize the growth and development of all players.

  • Encourage player participation and improvement in a fun and supportive environment.

  • Introduce basic lacrosse concepts and terminology in an engaging way.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Maintain regular communication with Unit 1 Athletics to align on objectives, player progress, and coaching strategies.

  • Work closely with parent volunteers to ensure they feel supported and understand their roles during practices.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experience coaching lacrosse or working with youth athletes in a sports setting is preferred.

  • Strong understanding of lacrosse fundamentals, with the ability to adapt teaching to young players.

  • Ability to create engaging, high-energy practice plans tailored to players of diverse skill levels and ages.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with experience working alongside parent volunteers.

  • Passion for working with young athletes and fostering a love for the sport.

  • Completion of the Massachusetts Youth Lacrosse Coaching Training is required before the start of the season.
